The Little Nyonya follows Yue Niang, a gifted Peranakan (Straits Chinese) woman known for her cooking and needlework, who grows up facing discrimination in a traditional family because of her low status and her mother’s controversial marriage to a Japanese photographer.[4] As she comes of age, jealousy and family pressure disrupt her romance with Chen Xi (who initially hides his true identity), and she is even sold off to a local gangster—yet her courage earns his respect and she becomes his sworn sister instead of a powerless victim.[4] Determined to shape her own fate, Yue Niang pushes through repeated setbacks and gradually builds an independent life, striving for success while still carrying an enduring love she cannot easily let go of.
